Subhash’s Journey: From Grocery Store Worker to Business Owner Through Resilience in

Subhash’s journey from pushing grocery carts to becoming a successful business owner is a testament to resilience in entrepreneurship. Growing up in Queens, Richmond Hill, Subhash was always a hard worker, willing to take on any challenge. Whether it was building sets for drama clubs or working in a grocery store, Subhash performed every task with dedication and zeal. For three years, he performed every role in the store. But despite his hard work, he knew he was destined for more. “I watched people get promoted from other stores… people who started after me get promoted before me,” he recalled. It was then that he decided to take a leap and seek new opportunities.

Determined to change his circumstances, Subhash began looking for jobs that aligned with his aspirations. Not long after, an in-person interview with a sales company in Long Island stood out to him. “It was different seeing people who looked like me from similar backgrounds, even similar ages, in a professional environment and in leadership positions,” he noted. That connection made him take a chance on the sales role. Even though it would be a challenge to step into a new field. “I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I had to apply myself,” he admitted.

Initially, his family was uncertain about his decision to step into a new industry. His mother, having faced difficulties in a similar sales role, worried about his success—but never wavered in her support. His grandmother encouraged him to follow traditional career paths, but as they began to see his personal and professional growth, their doubts turned to admiration. “They started to expand their perspective and truly support me,” Subhash shared.

Over the past three years, Subhash has built a thriving business. His resilience in entrepreneurship has allowed him to support his family in ways he never imagined. He helped his mother with a down payment on a house, assisted his sister in starting her own makeup business, and even began to provide guidance to his grandparents. “It really was a big shift, that I can actually provide leadership and provide guidance for them- the roles reversed in that way.”

Subhash attributes his success to being a dedicated learner. “When I started this, I was far behind others mentally, professionally, and skill set wise. But I became a really good student and studied,” he said. His commitment to growth has taken him from an hourly worker with no clear future to a business owner and leader who provides opportunities for his family and others.

Subhash’s story proves that resilience in entrepreneurship, coupled with a willingness to learn and take risks, can lead to remarkable success.
